The Mission of Whittier
College Campus Safety
The Department of Campus Safety’s mission is to create and
maintain a safe environment for all facets of the college
community.
With the aspect of crime prevention in mind, the department
provides a variety of educational programs to their faculty,
staff and students. In addition, we provide extensive campus
patrols on a 24 hours basis. These efforts, coupled with
assistance of other campus entities, help to provide a safe
environment for those who study, reside, visit or work here at
Whittier College.
The Department of Campus Safety is responsible for law
enforcement, security and emergency response at Whittier
College. All officers receive a minimum reserve police academy
training certification by the California Commission on Peace
Officers Standards and Training. This requirement may be waived
if the officer possesses a minimum of 300 hours of
training/education in the field. After training, each officer
must complete a ten week training program.
In addition to the initial training requirement, all officers
must attend yearly training outside of the department:
The Department’s administrative staff has all completed the
University Of
Southern California Delinquency Control
Institute. This six week program deals with the major issues
faced by law enforcement leadership today.
All Shift Supervisors are required are required to complete
the
Incident Command / Hands On Training Course, which is taught
at the Center For Domestic Preparedness by the Department of
Homeland Security in Anniston, Alabama. This course was designed
to improve the working relationship between other emergency
services agencies and local law enforcement in the event of a
disaster.
All officers are required to attend the Deputy Leadership
Institute, which is sponsored by the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department.
In addition, the Department handles the parking services
function for the college as well.
The department also operates a full-service College Operator and
Emergency Dispatch Center located in the Campus Safety Office.
The center is staffed 24 hours a day by both fulltime and
part-time employees. The dispatch center also houses monitoring
equipment for the college’s fire and intrusion alarms, as well
as our camera system. Please note that our camera monitoring
equipment is used for evidentiary purposes only. |
