Campus Movie Fest
comes to Whittier College...
by Trey Astbury
Have you ever wanted to make a movie? Well, here comes CampusMovieFest,
which is held at universities around the world and which has arrived at
Whittier College. Students had one week to make a movie and submit the
film. At Whittier there are about 30 teams registered for the
CampusMovieFest., 19 of which have been submitted. The movies will be
shown in Hoover 100 on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7:30.
Truthfully, I have had little time to prepare for this article because I
am taking part in the film festival. I’m not going to talk about the
premise of my film (that’s a secret) but I have discovered that making a
five-minute film is very hard, especially a high quality one.
First, pre-production is essential to the project. This involves writing
scripts and getting actors interested and involved. Sure, there will be
actors who say they can take part in your film, but you will need their
full participation for the movie to work. Mostly, it involves
scheduling. Part of this involves acting like a secretary and writing
down dates and remembering what you need to shoot and what you need for
props, etc.
No matter what anyone says, this is a lot of work. In my project, I
have had some actors drop out, had some continuity errors and have had
to deal with huge amounts of homework (Someone pull out a violin for
me). Now that everything is finally over, I can breathe and take a
shower.
CampusMovieFest is very exciting because Whittier does not offer a film
major. The festival gives Whittier students the opportunity to make a
film. “It’s not everyday you make a movie and it will be shown in a film
festival,” Video Production Club President junior Drew Southern said .
“CampusMovieFest is a way to get people together to explore the medium
of film and moviemaking. The categories of these films range from horror
to comedy to documentaries.
An exuberant student, junior Sean Summerall gave his thoughts about his
film.
“My film turned out swimmingly. My film is an examination of our body on
drugs. It is the journey through the depths of our mind. It is entitled
The Trip.” Throughout the week, people like Summerall carried
their cameras and tripods with them everywhere. In Wardman, people came
out of the rooms with fake blood all over them.
Everyone should check out the festival as it gives everyone a chance to
see the artistic merits of the students here. After all, we are
competing against UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona and USC at the Los Angeles Grand
Finale on Tuesday, Nov. 13. But if you have a movie dream, make it
happen with the CampusMovieFest and you might be surprised by the places
you’ll go.
