William Geiger, professor of English
language and literature, was a panel member at
the National Social Science Association
convention that discussed Western Civilization.
Geiger authored chapters on 19th century
imperialism, European thought in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, and the rise of
totalitarianism.
Joseph Price, professor of religious
studies, presented "Touching the Bases in
Baseball and Faith" at the annual meeting of the
American Culture Association in Boston,
Massachusetts.
Price gave talks about Rounding the Bases,
a book he authored about the intersection of
sports and religion, to the Ted Williams Chapter
of the Society for American Baseball Research in
February, an opening exhibition on Baseball and
Whittier at the Whittier Museum and Library
Program of the Whittier Public Library in March.
He also spoke on "The National Anthem for the
National Pastime" at a local chapter of the
P.E.O. and the Whittier YMCA.
Associate professor of biology Cheryl Swift
presented a preliminary research paper titled
“Water Relations of Selected Fynbos Species” at
the annual meeting of the South African
Association of Botanists in Cape Town in
January. Swift is a visiting scientist at the
University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Her
research is focused on identifying differences
in drought tolerance in tree species typical of
streamside vegetation.

Charles Adams, professor of English language
and literature presented “Jackie Robinson, Curt
Flood, Baseball and African-American Spiritual
Autobiography” at the 18th Annual Cooperstown
Symposium on Baseball and American Culture.
Joyce Kaufman, professor of political science,
presented her latest research, “Women’s
Political Activism in Northern Ireland: Women’s
Political Response to ‘the Troubles,’” at the
Center for International Studies at USC.
Seamus Lagan, professor of physics, discussed
“Computational Oscillations and Waves at the
Sophomore Level,” at the American Association of
Physics Teachers summer meeting.
Ayesha Shaikh, assistant professor of
psychology, delivered papers on ethical issues
in undergraduate psychology programs and
“Rewards and Risks of Multiple Relationships
between Faculty and Students: Navigating the
Slippery Slope” at the Western Psychological
Association Conference
David Iyam, Marilyn Gottschall, Devin Iimoto,
Lana Nano, Jose Orozco, Rebecca Overmyer-Velasquez,
David Paddy, Cheryl Swift, Deborah Norden
participated in Shared Futures: General
Education for Global Learning, a summer
institute sponsored by the Association of
American College and Universities. The five-day
institute took place at Smith College in
Massachusetts.
Professor Joseph Price delivered a
presentation on “The Allure of the Game and the
Alchemy of Fandom” at the American Academy of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in San Diego,
CA. Price, the C. Milo Connick Professor of
Religious Studies, is the author of Rounding the
Bases: Baseball and Religion in America.

Sartorius gave a talk on "The Price of
Integrity: Race, Empire, and Loyalty in Late
Colonial Cuba" for a lecture series on colonial
Latin America at the University of Southern
