Openings Available at Broadoaks Children’s School at Whittier College
The Broadoaks Children’s
School of Whittier College has a few openings for the 2004-2005 school year in
its preschool and elementary school programs. This unusual opportunity is
available because the school has opened a new classroom.
High-quality instruction and building communities of learners are the
cornerstones of the school’s educational programs. Founded in 1906, Broadoaks is
one of the oldest and most well respected demonstration schools in the country.
Today the school serves children from preschool through sixth grade during the
regular school year and preschool through ninth grade in the summer. The
school’s instructional approach emphasizes active learning, critical thinking,
and creativity across the curriculum. Broadoaks follows California State
Standards, and the school focuses on academic, social, and personal development,
including social responsibility, according to Judith Wagner, professor of
education and child development and director of the school. All of Broadoaks’
elementary classrooms have a teacher: child ratio of 1:15 or better.
Broadoaks is open from
7:15 a.m. until 5:30 or 5:45 p.m. daily. Before- and after-school special
programs include such co-curricular activities as violin, choir, digital
technology, chess, woodworking, cooking, gardening, homework club, arts and
crafts, oil painting, French, Spanish, exercise, line dancing and hip-hop, and
basketball.
Openings for the coming school year are expected to fill very quickly. For
information about the school or to arrange a tour, contact Wagner at (562)
907-4250.
