Whittier College’s Broadoaks School Receives Hearts at Work Award
The Broadoaks Children’s
School of Whittier College will host about 30 volunteers from Kaiser Permanente
of Bellflower as part of that organization’s Hearts at Work Community Service
Project on Saturday, Aug. 14. Volunteers will include Kaiser Permanente doctors,
nurses, and staff members, as well as their families.
Broadoaks’ administrators were notified about the award last spring. This is the
eighth year that Kaiser Permanente employees have selected several
special-service projects for Hearts at Work Day. More than 400 Kaiser Permanent
employees will spread out on Aug. 14 to perform such varied jobs as working with
senior citizens, making ceramics with underprivileged children and helping to
paint and restore a historical home that is now a museum in Bellflower,
according to Jaime Garcia, director of public relations at Kaiser Permanente of
Bellflower Broaodaks’ staff members have collaborated with Kaiser Permanente
representatives to develop plans for their project, the Kaiser Permanente
Children’s Garden, which will be located at the northeastern entrance to the
Children’s School and the Whittier campus. The garden will include grassy areas,
a planting area for flowers and vegetables, a stairway to the school office, the
American flag circle with mosaics created by children, and a brick reading
patio.
Broadoaks will dedicate
the area to Kaiser Permanente of Bellflower and present a plaque that will be
displayed at the hospital.
Broadoaks is nationally
and internationally recognized for its work with children, families, and college
students preparing for careers in teaching, social work, psychology, physical
education and recreation, medicine, law and related fields. The school serves
children from preschool through sixth grade during the regular school year and
preschool through ninth grade in the summer.
Broadoaks’ curriculum
emphasizes community service, said Judith Wagner, professor of education and
child development and director of Broadoaks. “Through its Hearts at Work
project, Kaiser Permanente employees will show the children that service to
others is a lifetime endeavor.”
