FEMINIST ICON MARY DALY
“RECALLS THE COURAGE TO SIN BIG”
Whittier, CA (March 23, 2005)—Feminist icon and scholar Mary Daly will discuss
“Amazon Grace: Recalling the Courage to Sin Big” on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:00
p.m. in the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts, 6760 Painter Avenue,
located on the Whittier College campus. Sponsored by the Whittier College Gender
and Women's Studies Program, in collaboration with Johnson Faculty Master’s
Program and student organization Council of Representatives, this event is open
to the public. General admission is $5.00, and reservations can be made by
calling the Shannon Center Box Office at (562) 907-4203.
With her work largely zeroing in on the nature of patriarchy and issues of
sexism in ontological terms, Mary Daly is nothing if not a controversial figure
in American intellectual life. Critics call her a “feminist revolutionary” and
accuse her of reducing all the planet's problems--from genocide to ecological
destruction--to the structures of patriarchy. More moderate feminists have
attempted to qualify her arguments, but no one writing about gender and
spirituality or about the future of the planet ignores her. Her work spans the
disciplines--from religion and philosophy to anthropology and biology--and what
one recent writer described as her "eloquent zeal" is as bracing as her
brilliant, iconoclastic use of language.
Daly received her Ph.D. in religion at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame,
Indiana. Unable to pursue a Ph.D. in Catholic theology in the United States, she
continued her studies at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, where she
was the first woman to receive the highest degree possible in sacred theology,
and with honors (summa cum laude). Daly then went on to earn a third Ph.D., also
at Fribourg, in philosophy. When she returned to the United States, she took an
appointment as faculty member at Boston College, where she has remained for
nearly three decades amid considerable controversy.
Daly is the author of countless articles and lectures as well as seven books--
four of which, have become feminist classics. She is currently at work on her
eighth book, Amazon Grace: Recalling the Courage to Sin Big.
