Course description |
PHYS 135B is the second part of PHYS 135 College Physics course.
It will cover topics of geometric optics, electricity and magnetism, and
modern physics. PHYS 135 is designed for students who require a year of lab
physics as part of a pre-health program. It constitutes a suitable year-long
physics experience. PHYS 135 does not satisfy the Liberal Education ILS
requirement. The topics covered in are selected so as to cover as much of
MCAT physics content as possible. Consequently, there will be a significant
amount of material that will be covered. The pace of the course, therefore,
will be hasty. So be prepared! The labs will be incorporated to the lecture
in a workshop format. The class will meet three times a week. You will keep
an activity (lab) notebook, which will be graded at the end of the semester. We will implement some new teaching techniques such as Peer
Instruction, Think-Pair-Share, and Just-In-Time-Learning throughout this
course. They have been shown to be very effective teaching techniques that
help students establish a more thorough and permanent understanding of the
material covered. There will be unannounced quizzes and pre-class reading
assignments almost regularly. Your efforts and performance in these will be
gauged and evaluated together with the other grading factors (see below) at
the end of the semester to contribute toward your final grade. If you have a specific
disability that qualifies you for academic accommodations, please contact Disability
Services for letter of accommodation. |
|
Attendance policy |
Due to the workshop format of this course,
attendance is crucial, including the problem solving session. The latter will
function as a review for the course and exams! If you miss three classes
without a valid excuse your grade will go down by one letter grade (your
valid excuse MUST be documented by, for example, a note from the health
services. Conflict with your job does NOT constitute a valid excuse!). However, please note that there won’t be a
chance to make up for it. Bring your notes to me without being asked! |
|
Grading |
1st Midterm Exam : 25%
(Mar 3 in class) 2nd Midterm Exam : 25%
(Apr 7 in class) Homework: 15% Activities: 10% Final: 25% (cumulative) (On Saturday, May 7, 2011 at
8:00-10:00am) |
|
Homework |
Homework will be posted on the course website, and will be due in
class a week after it is given. Homework solutions will be posted on the
website right after the due date. No homework will be accepted after the
class! |
|
Things to remember |
If you need a high grade in the class, you can get it only
by putting in the necessary effort. No extra credit avenue is available other
than what is given above in the grading section. Cell phones must be off during the class! Don’t be tardy. Respect yourself, respect others. College education is a trade, you certainly give a lot of money…
and how much will you get out of it? That depends on how much effort you are
prepared to put in. Your primary reason for being here is education, other
things should be secondary. |
