Dr. Heldman
grew up in the small town of Yacolt, Washington.
She earned a bachelor's degree in Business
Administration from Washington State University,
and worked as the
general manager for a holistic medicine company,
Bio-Energy Systems, upon graduation. She went to
work for Congress in Representative Jolene Unsoeld’s Washington, D.C. office in 1993 after
several years of political activism in
Washington State. Dr. Heldman studied statistics
and research methods at the University of
Michigan and earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers
University. She has worked as a
researcher for the Yale University Health Values
Study, the Eagleton Poll, Consumer Health
Sciences, and The Empower Program. Dr. Heldman
taught fulltime at Fairfield University and
Rutgers University prior to her appointment at
Whittier College in the fall of 2002. In
addition to her academic career, Dr. Heldman has
an active music career. She performed with the
Mason Gross Opera Company for several years and
has been a featured performer in several local
New York bands. Dr. Heldman is a fourth-don
master who has been a Tae
Kwon Do competitor and instructor for the past
fourteen years. She currently instructs
the Whittier College Martial Arts Club.
