Giving Service Outside of Los Angeles: Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort
During the December 2006 semester break, when many chose to relax from the stress of finals, eight Palmers went to New Orleans to help gut homes affected by Hurricane Katrina. Approximately 40 Whittier College students volunteered one week of their break in this trip sponsored by Whittier College aiming to make a difference in New Orleans. The group traveled almost 60 hours round trip by charter bus in this effort. Their accommodations and activities in New Orleans' 9th Ward were organized by the charity Common Ground Relief. While there, students were assigned to crews and all together the Poet crews proudly gutted 7 homes during their 4 day stay! The group had amazing experiences while enjoying their time as volunteers and many hope to return sometime soon to help out.
Palmers who volunteered on this trip include: Ellen Anderson ('09), Sherry Armstrong ('07), Adriana Durflinger ('09), Jenn Edington ('07), Joyce Lee ('10), Marcia Meyers ('08), Bobbie Roy ('07), Jenny Smith ('07).
