Shannon Center for Performing Arts
Girl Just wanna have Fun…well not any kind of girls…but Palmer Girls! Homecoming
was held on October 24th, 2009 themed “Palmer Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” Members
enjoyed a lovely brunch on the Shannon Center Patio under a bright Southern
California sun. There were many alumnae that returned for another year to
spend time with their sisters and share their stories with the actives. Food and
company was wonderful and many say the look forward to next year's event.
Ending with our traditional song singing and welcoming all the new white roses,
we all look forward for another year and more stories to be told.
Green Homecoming Invite
Palmer Sisters signed up for our
The Palmer Society Green Homecoming
Campaign, volunteered to receive their annual Homecoming event
invitation via e-mail thus reducing paper and postage costs.
The Palmer Society sent 77 Palmer Society Green Homecoming Invites this
year allowing the Society to cut its paper usage for the first time since
we started the program 2 years ago. This is on top
of saving postage costs and the carbon footprint that service contains. Thank you to our Green
Homecoming Volunteers for doing their part to reduce use of precious
resources.
The Palmer Society congratulates our Palmer sister,
Phyllis Lee Swinnerton on receiving a Poet Award. These annual awards are
presented to outstanding alumni in the following categories: Outstanding
Young Alumnus, Alumnus Achievement, Community Impact, and Service to the
College. Mrs. Swinnerton is being honored with a Community Impact Award
this year during Whittier Weekend.
Candidates for these awards are nominated by peers
then are reviewed and voted upon by a special committee of the Alumni
Association Board of Directors, headed this year by Dr. Dennis Welch '68,
vice president of the board. Previously honorees from the Palmer
Society include Roberta (Garrett) Veloz '57 (2007- Dezember Distinguished
Service), longtime Palmer Faculty Advisor Mike "Doc" McBride (2003-
Honorary Alumni), Barbara June "BJ" (Fauskin) Hill
‘50 (2003- Alumni Community/Public Service Award),
Karin Strasser-Kauffman '63 (1997- Alumni Achievement), Barbara (Ondrasik)
Groce ' 57 (1989- Service to the College), and Katherine (Nisbet) Dean '51
(1986- Alumni Achievement).
Mrs. Swinnerton was as a teacher and counselor for 30
years before retiring in 1990. Together with her husband, she went on to
teach a tobacco, alcohol, and drug prevention program to elementary age
students and traveled to Russia on two occasions with “Creating a Sober
World” to share alcohol recovery programs. Phyllis has served her
community for the past 19 years with various organizations including the
San Bernardino County Alcohol Advisory Board, the Yucca Valley Basin Youth
Accountability Board, the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer
Society. You can also find her in the role of Mrs. Claus at
"Tender Loving Christmas" where the community donates time, toys, food,
and money to those in need. Phyllis is currently serving her fourth term
on the Morongo School Board.
Mrs. Swinnerton was recognized for her outstanding
service record along with other Poet Award recipients at a special
