Palmer Member, Tina Rinaldi,
as W.C. President for a Day

Tina's President for a Day Blog

President Herzberger's Student for a Day Blog

My name is Tina Rinaldi. I am a senior, an English and Art History double major, a proud member of the Palmer Society, co-president of Sigma Tau Delta (Upsilon Chapter), a soprano in choir and on March 30th, I acted as President of Whittier College, while President Herzberger walked in my shoes as a student and as a Palmer.

It was such an incredible experience! I started off my day hosting a “Walk and Talk” with students, followed by a meeting with faculty where I addressed the majority of staff about the concerns of commuter students.

While I spent my day learning about the college’s reaccredidation process and discussing improvements to being made to the Health Center, President Herzberger took notes in my classes, sang in choir and (wearing my Palmer sweatshirt) met with my sisters for a Palmer Rock Lunch!  The day was fulfilling for both me and the President as we were able to experience and appreciate the day to day tasks of the other. I know that President Herzberger valued the insight she gained on what it meant to be a commuter and a society member, while I will certainly never forget my eventful day as President.

Intersociety Steering Committee Formed
"Impact of New Academic Calendar on Society Pledging"

A Steering Committee has been formed to address the impact of the new academic calendar on the Society pledging process. The ultimate goal of this committee will be to work with the actives, alumni, and administration to draft a revised pledging timeline, to identify potential challenges therein, and to propose workable solutions to these challenges that can be quickly and efficiently implemented for the 2010-11 academic year.

An Alumni Town Hall Meeting was held on April 16 to have an open discussion on this matter and to enable all interested Society alumni to take an active role, to clarify their concerns, and to have their questions answered an open forum. Scheduled attendees included President Sharon Herzberger, Dean Jeanne Ortiz and Associate Dean Andre Coleman, ISC co-chairs, and members of the Steering Committee. If possible, video, audio, or written transcript will be made available for those alumni who were unable to attend.

Display of Early Life at Whittier College

December is known as Founders Month, in which the Palmer and Franklin Societies recognize the founding of Whittier College. In December 2009, the Palmers Society decided to recognize the Early Life of Societies with an exhibit in the Whittier College Library. All societies were able to donate a few times items that were dated from 1900-1950s such as pictures, photo albums, and articles and much more. All these items were displayed throughout December. There was a reception held the first day of the display during which alumni from different societies were welcomed to view the display. The exhibit and reception were featured in the Whittier Daily News and was well attended. Palmer Alumnae Margy Bonney and Judy Kraft as well as Palmer President and Exhibit Organizer Tina Rinaldi were interviewed for the article. This was a great success and it gave each society an opportunity to share their early life.
