The student employment
program at Whittier College is designed to provide
students with on-campus employment while attending
Whittier College. Students gain valuable work
experience, which can prepare them for employment in
future years, while participating directly in the life
of the Whittier community.
How does this program work?
Work-study is a College-administered program, through
which you earn your award allocation to pay for your
educational expenses. The amount of your work-study
award represents the maximum allocation you may earn.
You obtain part-time employment on-campus or in local
non-profit organizations and are paid
for all hours worked. If you do not work the number of
hours required to earn the full allocation of your
award, you will only receive earnings for the number
of hours you actually worked.
Most students work an average of 10-15 hours per week
to earn their maximum award amount for the year. You
may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during periods
of enrollment and up to 40 hours per week during
approved periods of non-enrollment, provided the
amount of your work award is sufficient to cover this
number of hours. You will receive biweekly paychecks
based on the number of hours you worked during the
previous pay period.
Information about all work-study positions can be
obtained in the Office of Career Services. Job
positions vary and include opportunities in research,
tutoring, community service, administration and office
operations, computing, and library services.
If you accept your work-study award, you will be sent
information during the summer, which will include
employment procedures, pay rates, and how to obtain
available positions.
Other Work Opportunities
If you do not have a College Work-Study Award,
off-campus employment can be another meaningful way of
meeting College expenses. To assist in this area, the
Office of Career Services offers an internet-based
job-listing site called Monstertrak.com. Monstertrak
lists employment opportunities in the Whittier area
and in nearby cities. Most of these positions are
within walking- or bus-distance of the campus. Typical
positions include clerical work, financial services,
sales, childcare, tutoring, and food service. The
hours of employment for these positions are usually
flexible and range anywhere from 5 to 20 hours per
week.
The Career Services staff is dedicated to helping
students find possible positions that meet their
individual needs. A few additional non-work-study funded
jobs are available on campus. Check with the Career
Services or your academic department for additional work
opportunities.
