Fall Semester
FREN 173/473: FRENCH CINEMA
This survey course is taught in English. It presents the
main movements and directors in French Cinema. You will view
and discuss films representing the evolution of French
Cinema from the very first films in world history (by the
Lumière Bros.) to contemporary productions like "Amélie."
Selected movements will include Poetic Realism, the New
Wave, and the Cinema du Look. We will analyze films by Jean
Renoir, François Truffaut, and Jean-Luc Godard, among
others. You will be introduced to global trends in film
history and their incarnation in French cinema. You will
also learn about cinema concepts, vocabulary, and theory in
order to articulate meaningful analyses.
No Pre-requisites. Offered every Fall.

Study L.A. in the Fall, and discover Paris in January!
We're full but... SPECIAL OPENINGS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS!
Are you interested in an experience in which you’ll get to
know your home better and travel abroad? If so, these
courses are for you. In the fall, we’ll spend time learning
about social, literary, political and geographical issues
concerning L.A. and Paris, with a focus on Los Angeles.
Coursework will include films, literature, scholarly
articles and, most importantly, field trips in and around
L.A. In January, the course takes place in the heart of
Paris, where we deepen our knowledge of these issues through
intense study and visits. We’ll study Paris, its
neighborhoods, its diverse inhabitants, its history, and its
cultures. We’ll put what we’ve learned together in
comparative studies of issues in both of the cities.
Le Flaneur I (TR 3:00-4:20, FALL 2006) and Le Flaneur II
(PARIS, 10-27 January, 2007). If you are interested in this
sequence of courses, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
The price is 1400 dollars and includes: room, two meals a
day, museum and excursions in Paris, travel in and around
Paris. We stay in the heart of Paris in a beautiful
17th-century building. Access to all of Paris is easy and
safe from our location.
Courses can be taken under French or Sociology and must
include concurrent enrollment in any French language course
or at least previous college-level French language
experience. Fulfills Connections I requirement and CK (Pair)
requirement in former curriculum. 1 semester of French
required. New curriculum credits under review. For more
