   SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Whittier College Department of Special Collections houses an important set of historical, cultural, and literary archives. The holdings in these collections represent an important linkage to the College's Quaker heritage. The growth and development of the Special Collections has always been closely intertwined with the College's history and mission.

The Special Collections are housed on the ground floor of Wardman Library. These include: Religious Society of Friends (Quaker); John Greenleaf Whittier; Richard Nixon; Jessamyn West; Jan de Hartog; and Lola Hoffman. The Nixon Room, located on the top floor of the Library, houses memorabilia donated to the College by the thirty-seventh president of the United States, Richard M. Nixon.

Visitors to the Special Collections must see a Library staff member for assistance. Items in the Special Collections are primarily limited to library use only. Most of the books in these collections are listed on the Whittier College online catalog, WALDO.

Hours of use for the Special Collections are:

Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Researchers are encouraged to contact the Special Collections staff at 562-907-4246 before visiting the Library.

Photocopying and Scanning

Due to the rare nature and delicate condition of many of the materials in the Special Collections, items may be photocopied or scanned by permission only.
