Religious Society of Friends, Quaker
Collection: Whittier College was founded by
members of the Religious Society of Friends in
the late nineteenth-century. The Quaker
Collection originated with contributions from
these early founders, and has grown to become
the largest historical archive of Quaker
materials in the western United States. With
holdings of over 6,000 books and periodicals, it
is also the largest of the College's Special
Collections. The core of the collection consists
of an extensive set of memoirs ("personal
narratives") and diaries, Quaker regional
histories, family genealogies, meeting minutes,
periodicals, and reference materials. A
description of the general reference sources as
well as regional publications used in conducting
genealogical research can be found in the guide,
"Genealogical Sources in the Quaker Collection,
Whittier College." |
