INTERLIBRARY LOAN/LINK+
LINK+
LINK+ is a patron-initiated service available to
Whittier College students, faculty, and staff.
It allows patrons to submit online requests for
books, not available in their own library but
available at any of the other participating
libraries. The materials are delivered by
courier to the home library for checkout. It is
not available to Courtesy Card holders. It is
found as a selection on WALDO, the online
catalog, which should be checked first before
submitting a request.
What’s available using LINK+?
Items listed as “Available” in LINK+ are
available for borrowing. Generally, this means
books.
How long does a LINK+ request take?
The time between making a request for an
available item and picking up the item is
approximately 3-5 days. Items will be held for
pick up for 10 days.
How am I notified and where do I pick up my
LINK+ requests?
You will be notified in your campus mail box or
by phone when your items arrive. They can be
picked up at the Circulation Desk. You will need
your ID card for checkout. If materials are not
picked up within ten days they will be
automatically sent back.
How long can LINK+ items be kept?
The loan period is 21 days with one renewal of
an additional 14 days. Items can be renewed from
3 days before the due date.
How many LINK+ requests can be made at a time?
Patrons may have 15 LINK+ transactions at any
one time. This includes pending requests,
received books, and returned books still in
transit.
What are LINK+ fines and replacement costs?
The overdue fine for items returned after the
due date is $1.00 per day per item. Replacement
costs for lost or damaged LINK+ books is
$115.00.
How do I check the status of a LINK+ request?
Borrowers may monitor the status of LINK+
requests in the <VIEW your circulation record>
option in WALDO. LINK+ requests are listed under
holds. When the status is listed as <Received>
the item is ready for pickup. A LINK+ request
can also be cancelled in the <VIEW your
circulation record> option under holds, but only
if the item still has a “Requested” status. If
the item is “In transit” or “Received,” the
request may not be cancelled.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) refers to the borrowing
and lending of materials between libraries.
This service is available to all currently
enrolled students, faculty, and staff at
Whittier College. Courtesy Card holders are not
eligible for this service.
How do I make requests?
After checking WALDO, our online catalog, to
make sure Wardman Library does not carry the
book or journal, and after trying LINK+ [direct
link] in the case of books, choose: Interlibrary
LOAN requests. [direct link] You will be asked
for your name and barcode number. Please request
ONLY what you can use.
Is there a limit to the number of requests I can
make?
You can request up to four (4) items per week.
How much will it cost?
Most of the time, the service is free as the
College belongs to a number of consortia that
borrow and loan free to members. If there is a
fee, you will be asked if you are willing to pay
the charge, usually between $2.00 and $20.00,
before an item is requested.
How long before I will receive the requested
items?
Books are sent through the mail or by UPS and
can take up to 2 weeks or more to arrive.
Articles can be sent electronically and can
arrive as soon as one day after requesting, but
it may take longer. If several libraries must be
contacted before finding an available copy, the
process may take much longer. Be aware that some
libraries mail copies to us.
How am I notified and where do I pick up my
ILL requests?
You will be notified in your campus mail box or
by phone when books arrive. They can be picked
up at the Circulation desk. You will need your
ID card for checkout. You will be notified twice
and if not picked up, the materials will
automatically be sent back on their due date.
Journal articles will be sent directly to your
campus mail box.
What is the loan period and may I renew
items?
Each library has their own policy so due dates
will vary, as well as the possibility of
renewal. You must contact the ILL department 5
days prior to the due date to request a renewal.
What is the overdue fee?
You will be charged $1.00 per day for each
overdue ILL item. If an ILL item is overdue and
you pay at the time the item is returned, the
fine will be cut in half. There is no reduction
in fines for overdue Interlibrary Loan books.
May I request materials that Wardman Library
owns?
We will not request any book available at
Wardman Library. If a book is Checked out,
please try LINK+ [direct link] first. If a book
is “Missing” or “Lost”, try LINK+. If it is not
available through LINK+, we will request it
through Interlibrary Loan. Only a small number
of libraries loan master’s and doctoral theses.
We will also request articles for you from
periodicals we own if the particular issue is
“At bindery” or “Missing.”
