Lola B. Hoffman (1902-90) graduated from
Whittier College in 1923. She was one of the
founding members of the Palmer Literary Society
(along with her classmate and lifelong friend,
Jessamyn West). After working for the Los
Angeles Unified School District, she taught at
the College's Reading Clinic. Miss Hoffman also
enjoyed great success as an author. Her 1948
book, California Beginnings was a widely read
children's history of the state.
Lola Hoffman lived in Mexico for a number of
years, and heartily embraced the culture. This
is reflected in her sizable collection of
significant Spanish language publications, which
she donated to Whittier College. Lord
Kingsborough's Antiquities of Mexico (1831) is a
masterpiece. Other important items in her
library included rare Quaker materials,
incunabula, a Shakespeare folio, and numerous
17th century texts. |
