Math Department Announcements, Events, and other things you should know about!
Upcoming Conferences and Meetings: We're fortunate in Southern California to have a wide range of conferences and meetings within an hour's drive of Whittier! Attending conferences in Mathematics is a great way to hear interesting presentations on fascinating topics in math, meet interesting people in mathematics, industry, graduate programs, or just "see what's going on in math at other colleges". These events are as social as they are academic, and most attendees come back to school at the end of the day with a great deal of excitement, and a lot deeper understanding of what they're doing in their own classes. Some of the local conferences are also great venues for giving your first "Math Talk" in a very congenial setting.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Many graduate programs in Mathematics and the Sciences are looking more and more for research experience in their applicants. To respond to this increasing need, many undergraduate programs now offer "Research Experience for Undergraduates" (REU) programs. These are mostly, but not exclusively offered over the summer. Each REU program has it's own focus (Topology, Algebra, Applied Math, etc). There are several REU's offered specifically for women, and some offered for traditionally underrepresented groups in the Sciences. Most students attend an REU at the end of their Junior or even Sophomore year. Many pay for housing and food, and even provide a small salary! We in the Math department encourage our students to investigate the many available REU programs available around the country, or even abroad. The American Mathematical Society maintains a list of dozens of such programs! (Click here to see the AMS listing of REU's).
