Teacher Education Programs
The faculty of the Department of
Education and Child Development is committed to helping students
attain the highest academic and professional standards. Thus, the
department has established the following criteria for continuation
and advancement in teacher education programs:
Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in professional preparation
courses with no grade lower than a B-. Students must petition the
Department of Education and Child Development to repeat a credential
requirement in which a grade below B- is earned.
Students must demonstrate consistent, continuous progress toward
mastering the Teaching Performance Competencies defined by the State
of California under Senate Bill 2042. Students demonstrate such
progress by (1) maintaining a complete and thoughtful electronic
portfolio that meets department specifications and (2) taking and
passing California Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA) in a
timely fashion, as required by the department.
Students must consistently meet all of the standards described in
the Department of Education and Child Development's document,
Standards for Admission to, Advancement in, and Completion of
Teaching Programs. Criteria and procedures related to implementation
of these standards are defined in the document. All students
interested in Whittier College's education programs should obtain
and study the document.
