Department Overview

The chemistry department at Whittier College seeks to educate students in the five disciplines of chemistry

 Analytical Chemistry

 Biochemistry

 Inorganic Chemistry

 Organic Chemistry

 Physical Chemistry

Students gain an appreciation for the nature of molecules in the world around them by learning both the theoretical basis for chemistry as well as a hands on laboratory approach. In addition, research opportunities give students the chance to develop a deeper understanding of the scientific process through planning and designing experiments, data collection, and data analysis. Excellent teaching combined with small classes give students an optimal environment for learning. The faculty in the chemistry department are committed to giving students the best education possible.

Chemistry students are also involved in a wide array of activities on campus and in the department. Chemistry students have taken field trips to places such as the LAPD Crime Lab and have gone to secondary schools to give demonstrations.

Students who graduate with a degree from the chemistry department are prepared to go to graduate school in chemistry/biochemistry, medical school, other health science areas such as dental school, pharmacy school, optometry school, as well as graduate school programs in public health and genetic counseling. Also students with a chemistry/biochemistry degree can teach chemistry at the high school level and work in chemical industry.

The chemistry department at Whittier College is ACS (American Chemical Society) approved.
