Further Introduce students to organic chemistry journals

Provide an introduction into the format of articles, in particular to the presence of an an introduction and thesis of an article

Identify the types of questions that organic chemists ask and answer

 

  1. In groups of students, find three articles per person from three different volumes of the Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC).  Submit copies of the title page and the page from which your thesis comes (see below).
  2. From each article, find the thesis statement, quote it, and cite it (superscript number with footnote - use the same format that the journal uses to cite sources).
  3. With the members of your group, discuss the following questions:
bulletWhat do you find interesting about these theses? 
bulletWhat do you find confusing about them? 
bulletHow does this change your perspective on writing lab reports?  
bulletWhat perspectives did your group bring to the discussion? 
bulletWhat type of information is necessary to create a thesis?  Explain. 
bulletWhat questions would you want to ask about organic chemistry?  Explain.
  1. In a 1 - 2 page document (12 pt Times New Roman font, 0.75 inch margins, 1.5 line spacing), discuss and explain the type of questions that organic chemists ask and answer.  You might think about presenting an organized essay that could address the previous questions, however, DO NOT simply answer the questions in order; compose a well organized essay.
