Organic Chemistry I
Exploring the Structure and Reactivity of Organic Molecules

Literature Assignment #1

Purpose:

  • Introduce students to organic chemistry journals

  • Help students find journals on-line and in the library

  • Provide an introduction into the format of articles, in particular the citation of such articles

  • Develop skills for the integration of chemsketch and word in order to facilitate paper and report writing in chemistry

  • Identify how JOC identifies structures in a journal article

  • Identify the main functional group of molecules found in the article

  1. Find two articles from the Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC).  One must be from the on-line version (http://pubs.acs.org/journals/joceah/index.html) and one from the print version (see library shelves).  Submit copies of the title page and the page from which your molecule comes (see below)
  2. From each article, choose one organic molecule discussed in the article.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO READ THE ARTICLE!! How does the article refer to the molecule? (hint, look at the scheme that contains the structure - how does it identify it?)
  3. Find one sentence from the article that discusses the molecule.  Quote this sentence in a word document, providing a proper citation.  (superscript number with footnote - use the same format that the journal uses to cite sources).
  4. Draw the molecule using chemsketch and incorporate this into your word document.
  5. Identify the main functional group / groups for both molecules.
  6. Would this molecule react as a nucleophile, electrophile, acid and/or base?  Explain briefly.
