Organic Chemistry I
Exploring the Structure and Reactivity of Organic Molecules

Lab Report #1

Purpose:

bullet

Provide an opportunity to write a laboratory report introduction, including composition of an appropriate thesis statement

bullet

Identify how JOC reports experimental procedures

bullet

Provide an opportunity to write a laboratory report experimental section

bullet

Provide an opportunity to report the introduction of the experimental results from the synthesis of Pain Medications lab (Experiment 1 from the lab manual)

Introduction:

The introduction of a lab report establishes the background for the problem, the scientific significance of the problem and the fundamental question being investigated.  Do not confuse goals and objectives of the experiment with the significance of the experiment.  You want to address why you want to conduct the experiment and what benefit the experiment will do for the scientific community.  During the composition state of the process you will want to think about the introduction as being a funnel.  The introduction should start with a broad approach to the problem and slowly focus the discussion until the thesis statement is introduced.  This allows the audience to be logically lead into reading the article and thereby facilitating conveyance of information and development of understanding.  It is appropriate to cite relevant information.

At the conclusion of the introduction, a thesis statement is presented that will describe the remainder of the report.  It is important that this thesis statement addresses not only what the problem is, but also provides some insight into how the problem was addressed.

Experimental:

bulletFind an article from the Journal of Organic Chemistry that reports the synthesis of at least one molecule.  Find the experimental section of that article and in one paragraph summarize how synthetic procedures are reported in JOC.  You might want to look at several examples to help your discussion.  What format is used?  How verbose is this section?  What information is provided?  What information is not provided?  Explain.  What information is provided that you do not have?  Is it important information?  Explain.
bulletUsing this same format, report the experimental section for the synthesis of your pain medication.  Hint:  since you did two experiments, you should have two experimental sections.
bulletIn addition to the experimental section, please provide one scheme with your molecular structures depicted and appropriately designated.

This entire assignment should be completed in a word processor using 12 point Times New Roman Font, 0.75" margins, and 1.5 line spacing.  While there is no specified page limit, it is probably appropriate to be approximately 2 - 4 pages in length.  All structures must be composed in an appropriate electronic program; hand-drawn structures will not be accepted.

This Lab Report is due on Tuesday, November 18 at 5:00 pm
