Water Polo Finishes Fifth at SCIAC Championships
Perine ’08 Falls One Goal Short of Single Season Record
Karley Perine ’08 scored twelve goals as Whittier College went
2-1 and finished in fifth place at the SCIAC Championships hosted by the
University of Redlands on April 27-29. The fifth-seeded seeded Poets
(12-16, 5-5) lost their first round game 17-10 to #4 seed California
Lutheran University on April 27. The next day, Whittier beat #8 seed
Caltech 16-5 and on the final day, finished the tournament with a 10-7
victory over #6 seed Occidental College. |

Against Cal
Lutheran, Sarah Peel ’10 led the Poets offensively with a pair of
goals and three assists. Perine also scored twice, and was credited
with an assist, three drawn penalties and a steal. Catherine Gouge
’09 finished with two goals, an assist and a steal. Caroline
Galvin ’08, Nicole Sandoval ’08 and Ashley Papenbrock ’08
added one goal apiece. Sarah Wills ’09 made seven saves in three
quarters of work in goal.
In game two, Perine scored six goals and added an assist. She also
contributed with two drawn penalties and a steal. Galvin scored five
times and handed out two assists. Gouge ended up with four goals, two
assists and three steals. Sandoval, the Whittier all-time and single
season steals leader, had eight thefts on the day. Wills made six
saves.
In the fifth place game against Occidental, Perine and Galvin scored
four goals apiece. The four goals from Perine gives her 80 on the
season, one behind the single season record set by Kim Charlson in
2006. Galvin is fourth on that list with 78. The two are also third
and fourth on the career goals list, with Galvin having 181 and Perine
at 159. Papenbrock scored a goal and had three assists and Peel added a
goal and two assists. Wills made 11 saves in the final game of the
Poets’ season. |
