Water Polo Wins Three of Four at Lancer Invite
Perine '08 Leads Poets with 13 Goals
Karley Perine '08 scored 13 goals, including ten on day two,
as Whittier College went 3-1 at the two-day Lancer Invitational hosted
by California Baptist University at Pomona on March 9 and 10. The
Poets (6-8) beat the University of California-Santa Cruz 10-6 and Iona
University 9-8 on day one of the invitational. On day two,
Whittier lost 11-6 to California State-Monterey Bay, but bounced back in
their final game to beat St. Francis University 9-5.
Nicole Sandoval '08 led the way for the Poets in the win over
UC-Santa Cruz. She scored two goals, assisted on two others and
had four steals. Ashley Papenbrock '08 had two goals, two
assists and two steals. Catherine Gouge '08 also had two
goals and two assists and added a steal. Caroline Galvin
'08 scored twice and had an assist and two drawn penalties.
Perine drew six penalties on top of a goal and two steals.
Sarah Peel '10 also scored a goal. Sarah Wills '09 made
eight saves in goal. |

In the second game against Iona, Papenbrock and Galvin each finished
with a hat trick. Galvin also had two assists. Perine scored
twice, drew three penalties and had an assist. Sandoval scored
once and had three assists and two steals. Cheryl Bucholtz '07
made the start in goal and made eight saves.
Day two began with the loss to Monterey Bay. Perine scored four of
Whittier's six goals and drew two penalties. Galvin scored one
goal and assisted on another, drew five penalties and made two steals.
Peel scored the other Poet goal. Wills returned to the goal and
made eight saves.
Perine led the Poets to a victory in their final game of the
invitational with six goals. Galvin scored twice, drew five
penalties and had an assist. Papenbrock scored one goal.
Sandoval finished with four steals and two assists. Wills came off
the bench and made five saves in three quarters.
The Poets are in action again on March 17 and 18 at the Claremont
Colleges Tournament. Their first game is against Cal St.-East Bay
at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 17 at 9am. |
