Water Polo Edges Cal Lutheran
Poets Fourth in SCIAC

Mark Canner '07 scored three goals to lead Whittier College to a 9-8 victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival, California Lutheran University on November 4.  The Poets (3-16, 4-3 SCIAC) are now in fourth place in the conference while the Kingsmen (3-13, 3-4 SCIAC) fall to fifth.

Canner also had 2.5 steals for Whittier.  Cody Pletcher '07 and Lance Haver '10 scored two goals and had two steals apiece.  Pletcher also had two assists.  Jake Zerbe '07 had a goal and a team-high four steals.  Matt Brammer '09 also had four steals and made 12 saves in goal.

Whittier shut out the Kingsmen in the first half, taking a 4-0 lead into the break.  After three quarters the score was 7-3, but Cal Lutheran came back, outscoring the Poets 5-2 in the final stanza.  The Kingsmen had a number of opportunities to even the score as time wound down, but Brammer and the Poets' defense were equal to the task and took the 9-8 victory. 

The Poets
are the number four seed in the upcoming SCIAC tournament hosted by the University of La Verne.  Competition starts for the Poets as they take on the number five seed, Cal Lutheran, on November 10.
