April 18, 2005 – Track & Field Honors Three
Freshmen
All-Conference honors were awarded to Julia Tyack, Katie
Maiorano, and Matthew Fink for their efforts at the SCIAC
Championships. All three recorded personal bests. Tyack
lowered her school record in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Maiorano raced to the 4th fastest 100m Hurdle time in school
history. Fink moved up to 7th on Whittier’s all-time Hammer
list.
March 25, 2005 – Another emerging hammer star? It’s
Nicole Warner!
Former Mountain View H.S, El Monte, shot put specialist has
taken to the hammer in impressive fashion. At the Fresno
Pacific quadrangular hosted on Good Friday, Nicole’s hammer
heaves sent all Easter bunnies running for cover. Her best
for the session approached 100 feet, ranking her 5th on the
All-Time Whittier College List.
March 19, 2005 – Another freshman has
break-through performance
Chris Gartrell (Catalina H.S., Tucson, AZ) was recruited by
the football staff for his determination and quickness. He
showed just that, and stamina too, by winning his 400m heat
on a rainy day at the CS Northridge relays. Chris also
excels as a long jumper, but it was his wet-track 51.82 that
deserves recognition today.
March 12, 2005 – Freshman Fink cracks all-time list
in Hammer Throw
Matt Fink’s high school throws coach, Jerry Fenton, competed
for Whittier in the early 70’s and established himself as
one of the top all-time throwers in school history. Matt
(Valley Center H.S., Valley Center, CA) is following a
similar road to success. The freshman upstart placed 6th
among 19 hammer throwers at the multi-dual championships and
currently ranks 9th on the all-time Whittier College hammer
list.
March 12, 2005 - 1st Team All-SCIAC Cross Country
Runner Julia Tyack shattered the 3000m Steeplechase school
record in her first attempt while racing at the SCIAC
Multi-Duals on Friday. Julia placed 4th overall with a time
of 12:17.1, just 17 seconds behind the winner, defending
SCIAC runner-up Katie Mouzakis of CMS. Julia was the first
freshman finisher among an experienced field of veteran
steeplechasers. Her performance lowered the previous school
record, set last year by Kelly Orosz, by nearly a full
minute.
The women’s track & field team fought hard to tie Redlands
with a score of 85 to 85, suffered a narrow defeat by Cal
Lutheran, and lost to the remaining SCIAC teams by wider
margins (but… in all cases but Cal Tech, lesser margins than
last year).
March 11, 2005 – Freshman Tyack breaks
Steeplechase record
Freshman Julia Tyack (Lodi H.S., Lodi, CA) placed fourth at
the SCIAC Multi-Duals in her first steeplechase race ever.
Her time of 12:17 established a new school record. “It’s
remarkable what Julia did today, considering her limited
practice over the water jump. I was hesitant to let her do
it, but she proved to be more than capable. She has a bright
future in the event; according to Coach Phillips.”
February 26, 2005 – Track & Field Team host 5th annual
Invitational
The men’s and women’s track & field teams started the 2005
season with a nine college meet at the Aubrey Bonham Track
and Newman Field. The women’s team tallied enough points for
a fourth place finish while the men placed 5th.
Sprinter/Hurdler Katie Maiorano led the scoring with 12
points. Throwers Joel Simpson, Matt Fink, and Nicole Warner
earned 10 points each. A solid triple was turned in by
freshman Christopher Gartrell in the 400m, 200m, and long
jump. The most exciting race of the day featured a tactical
battle between several fine 1500m runners. At the tape,
former Kansas State standout Gerardo Rabelo (3:58.62) edged
out 2002 Whittier grad/steeplechaser Luis Ibarra (3:58.75).
Men’s and Women’s team titles went to NCAA Division II Cal
State Los Angeles.
