Men's Basketball Loses to La Verne
Four Poet Score in Double Figures
Tim Fanning '07 hit six three-pointers for a game-high 18
points, but Whittier College lost 67-63 to the University of La Verne in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Graham
Athletics Center on February 7. The Poets are now 8-12 overall and
2-7 in the SCIAC.
Jeff McLean '09 picked up his third double-double of the season
with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Seven of his rebounds came on the
offensive end and he also finished with five assists, three steals and
two blocks. Donovan White '10 was 5-for-9 from the field
and scored 12 points. Vernon Covington '08 added eleven
points and seven rebounds. |

The first half saw six lead changes with the largest lead for either
team the 36-27 advantage the Leopards (4-16, 3-6 SCIAC) held at the
half. La Verne was on fire in the first half, shooting nearly 58
percent from the field, while the Poets shot 33 percent. After
being down eleven early in the second half, the Poets cut the lead to
one with 8:33 remaining in the game. That would be as close as
they would get. The Poets forced 23 turnovers in the game, but
were unable to finish on the offensive end, shooting 36 percent from the
field in the game. The Leopards held a 41-31 edge on the glass and
shot 50 percent from the field.
The Poets are on the road for their next game against the California
Institute of Technology on February 10. Tip-off is scheduled for
7:30pm. |
