Nate Watkins
Head Coach

Nate Watkins is entering his first season as the head coach for Whittier.  He is originally from Horseheads, N.Y. and is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year letter winner and an All-American midfielder his senior season.  He won a gold medal in the World Games in Australia as a member of the United States Under-19 team.  After graduating, he was drafted by the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse.  He now plays for the San Francisco Dragons.

Watkins began his coaching career at his alma mater, where he helped guide the Terps to a Final Four appearance.  He then traveled to Whittier and was the defensive coordinator when the Poets made the NCAA Tournament in 2004.   The past two seasons he was head coach at the University of Southern California.

James Morgan
Assistant Coach

James Morgan is entering his first year as an assistant for the Whittier College men's lacrosse program.  Morgan is the offensive coordinator under head coach Nate Watkins.

Morgan attended Hofstra University 2001-05 where he lettered in men's lacrosse each of those years. During his career, the Pride picked up wins against national powerhouses Princeton, Syracuse, Duke and North Carolina.  He played attack and midfield his first two seasons, and was named the David McCartney Award winner as the team's hardest working sophomore.  His junior and senior year he moved to defensive midfield and was part of a man-down defense that ranked in the top ten in the country.  He was named team captain his senior season.
Morgan was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland and went to High School at the Key School.  After his senior year of high school, Morgan was named the Anne-Arundel Country Athlete of the Year.  Upon his graduation from Hofstra, he returned to his high school alma mater where he was a teacher and head coach of the boys' varsity lacrosse team.

Morgan is now finishing his degree in Kinesiology and Leisure Science at Whittier.  He resides in Seal Beach, Calif.

Brian Kelly
Assistant Coach


Brian Kelly will begin his second stint as assistant lacrosse coach at Whittier College two years after spending the 2004 season as a graduate assistant. Kelly now assumes the role of defensive coordinator under head coach Nate Watkins.

A graduate of Whittier College, Kelly earned his BA in Kinesiology in 2003. As a player, Kelly was a two-time All-American and was recognized as the best long stick mid-fielder in the country during his junior and senior seasons. Kelly was selected to the North/South Senior All-Star game after serving as captain during Whittier’s 2003 Final Four run. Kelly finished his Whittier playing career with over 300 ground balls, as well as contributing over 40 points in transition. Since his graduation, Kelly has played professionally in both the MLL and the NLL.

Kelly is employed as an elementary physical education teacher at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, CA. Kelly is recognized by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist, and has recently earned his MS in Exercise Science.
