FROM THE DESK OF COACH CARLSON – FOLLOWING POMONA GAME

The Whittier College football team could not overcome several unforced errors and were defeated by Pomona-Pitzer by a score of 24 – 9.  The Poet’s fell behind 14 – 0 in the second quarter but managed to fight back to close the margin to 14 – 9 by half time.  Pomona kicked a field goal in the third quarter to open up a 17 – 9 lead.  With 9:38 remaining in the game Pomona scored their final touchdown and lead 24 – 9.

The Poet’s offense was led by senior running back Alex Jones.  Alex rushed 9 times for 60 yards and also added 7 receptions for 76 yards to include a spectacular catch in the end zone on a 30 yard pass.  Sophomore Albert Williams had 4 receptions for 31 yards.  Freshman Anthony Pomponio was a bright spot on kick-off returns as he had 3 returns for 50 yards.  On defense, freshman Alex Devito, finished the game as the third leading tackler and played an overall solid game.  Linebacker Jared Izidoro continued his consistent play on defense.

The Poet’s are now 2 – 1 on the season.

The Poet’s next opponent is the #8 rank football team in Division III – Occidental College.  The Homecoming game will start at 1:00pm.
