FROM THE DESK OF COACH CARLSON: The 2005 Whittier football team opened their season at Colorado College with a 29 to 26 victory in overtime. Whittier tied the game 23 to 23 with 2:50 left in the 4th quarter. In overtime the Poet’s defense took the field first and forced Colorado College to kick a field goal. With the score 26 to 23 the Whittier offense took the field. On first down the offense was penalized for holding. With a 1st and 20 quarterback Josh Scurlock completed a pass to Albert Williams for 27 yards. With first and goal from the 8 yard line Alex Jones took the hand-off and rushed for 5 yards. With a loss of 2 yards on 2nd down the Poet’s offense was looking at a 3rd and goal from the 5 yard line. Whittier called a time out to set up the winning touchdown. Josh Scurlock took the snap and rolled to his left and threw to Kevin Cullina in the end zone for the winning score. The defense was lead by two freshmen linebackers, Jared Izidoro (12.5 tackles) and Sean Kuhn (7.5 tackles). On offense Josh Scurlock had 20 completions with 35 attempts and added another 79 yards on the ground. Alex Jones led all receivers with 8 receptions. Freshmen punter, Greg Herz, averaged 45 yards per punt. The Whittier football team will now host Menlo College on September 17th with kick-off at 7:00pm. Talk to you next week, Coach Carlson
