Greg Phillips
Head Coach

Greg Phillips is entering his 22nd year as head coach at Whittier College.  Phillips is also the Director of Whittier’s Track & Field programs and teaches in the Kinesiology and Leisure Studies Department. In 1994, Phillips was recognized as the NCAA West Region Women’s Coach-of-the-Year. He also competed in collegiate and post-collegiate cross country and track from 1978-1990.  He graduated with a master's  degree in the exercise sciences.   

 

Dr. Charles Laine
Assistant Coach

Dr. Charles (‘Chuck’) Laine  begins his 27th season as assistant cross country coach.  Dr. Laine is a professor of economics and has served as the chairperson for the Business Administration Department.  Like Phillips, Coach Laine runs with the teams during practices.  “I am very fortunate to have Chuck work with us”, said Phillips.  "The team respects his wisdom and he is very knowledgeable about the sport of distance running." 

 

Luis Ibarra
Assistant Coach


Luis Ibarra is entering his first season as assistant coach of the Whittier College cross country program. He is also an assistant on the track and field teams.  He is Whittier’s school record holder for the 3000m Steeplechase (9:10) and competes for Nike Team Run LA. He is a three time qualifier for the Mexican National Track & Field Championships and competed in the NCAA Division III National Championships while at Whittier.
