2007 Poets Baseball Overview

The Poets baseball team is coming off a 2006 campaign where they finished second in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 20-19-1 overall record and 10-8 record in conference play.  They return a solid nucleus of players from last season, especially on the pitcher’s mound.  “Our strength definitely lies in our pitching staff,” says 19-year coach Mike Rizzo.  “Sophomores Justin Armijo (2006 Second Team All-SCIAC) and Thomas Phelps (5 saves in ’06) and junior Blake Luitwieler (56 strikeouts in ’06) will anchor this year’s staff.  We’ll find out how good we are early on with five of our first nine opponents nationally ranked.”  The Poets open their season on February 2 with the first in a three-game series with national powerhouse, Chapman University.
