Women's Basketball Falls in Conference Opener
Poets Shoot Just 16% From Free Throw Line

Rosario Rios-Aguilar '08 scored a team-high 14 points, but Whittier College lost 55-47 to California Lutheran University in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener in Thousand Oaks, Calif. on January 11.  The Poets are now 6-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Michelle Mascoto '07 scored 10 points for the Poets.  She also had a team-high eight rebounds and six steals.  She leads the Poets this season in points per game (9.6), rebounds per game (7.5) and steals (4.4).

Whittier was down 26-21 at the break despite trailing 12-0 to begin the game.  Cal Lutheran was led by Tiffiny Shim with 20 points and eleven rebounds.  The Poets shot 39 percent from the field while the Regals shot 35 percent.  Neither team shot well from the free throw line, with Cal Lutheran making just 11-of-32 attempts (34%) and the Poets making just 3-of-18 (16%).

The Poets are in action again on January 13, when they travel to La Verne for another SCIAC contest.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm.
