Women's Basketball Falls Short Versus Claremont
Mascoto '07 Finishes with a Double-Double

Michelle Mascoto '07 scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, but Whittier College lost 58-56 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at Graham Athletics Center on January 25.  The Poets are now 8-7 overall and 2-3 in SCIAC play.

Rosario Rios-Aguilar '08 pitched in a team-high 13 points and Desiree Flores '08 added eleven.  The Poets shot 37 percent from the field in the game while the Athenas (9-7, 4-1 SCIAC) shot just 33 percent.

The Poets led by as much as nine points in the first half, before Claremont came back to tie the game at 23 going into the break.  The two teams went back and forth to start the second half, but the Athenas pulled away late and held a 10 point advantage with 2:01 left in the game.  However, the Poets fought back and Rios-Aguilar grabbed a rebound and hit a deep three-pointer to bring the Poets within two with under ten seconds remaining.  The Poets forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, but were unable to get a shot off to end the game.

The Poets are at home for another SCIAC contest on January 27.  They face he University of Redlands at 5pm.
