Softball Bounces Back for Game Two Win
Carrasco '10 Drives in Three Runs
Amanda Carrasco '10 went 3-for-5 with three RBI as Whittier
College split a conference doubleheader with the University of La Verne
at Palmer Softball Stadium on April 27. The Poets (22-16, 11-11)
were blown out in game one by a score of 18-4, but came back to win the
nightcap, 7-5.
In game one, Carrasco hit a two run single to provide half of the Poets'
run total. Brenna Winslow '07 went 3-for-4 at the plate
with an RBI double and a run scored. Charis Gaston '09 went
2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Deena Arenas '08 (9-9)
pitched four innings and allowed eleven runs on twelve hits and three
walks in the loss. |

La Verne scored in every inning but the fifth in game one. They
got things started with one in the first. The Poets evened the
score in the bottom half on Winslow's RBI double. The Leopards
came back with two more runs in the second and four in the third, making
the score 7-1. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of
the third, Carrasco drove in two runs and then Gaston drove in another
with back-to-back singles to cut the deficit in half. That was as
close as the Poets would get, however, as La Verne scored four more in
the fourth to make the score 11-4 and then blew up for seven runs in the
sixth to give them the 18-4 lead that would be the final after six
innings.
In game two, Gaston and Vicky Ovieda '09 each went 2-for-3 with
an RBI and a run scored. Gaston hit her third home run of the
season. Carrasco went 1-for-2 with one RBI, a walk and a run
scored. Erica Ureno '08 drove in a pair of runs.
Amanda Brown '09 went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ovieda (13-6)
earned the win by pitching six innings and allowing four runs on nine
hits and a walk. Arenas earned her first save of the year,
allowing one run on one hit and a walk. She struck out two of the
five batters she faced.
La Verne broke a scoreless tie in third inning with a two-run home run.
They added another run in the fourth to go up 3-0. The Poets
answered in a big way with six in the fourth inning. Whittier hit
six singles in the inning, and got help with two La Verne errors to take
a 6-3 lead. La Verne made it 6-4 with a run in the fifth.
Gaston's solo home run extended the lead back to three in the bottom
half of the inning. La Verne would attempt to rally in the top of
the seventh, but could only muster one run to make the final score 7-5.
The Poets wrap up their season on April 28 with a home doubleheader
against California Lutheran University. Games are scheduled to start
at 12pm and 2pm. |
