Softball Splits With Regals in Season Finale
Poets Finish With Third Most Wins in Program History
Amanda Brown '09 went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Whittier
College to a 8-6 game two victory in a doubleheader with California
Lutheran University at Palmer Softball Stadium on April 28. The
Poets (23-17, 12-12) lost game one, 12-2.
The Poets' 23 wins this season are the most for any Poet softball
team since 1987 when they finished 26-11. The Poets have not won
20 games in a season since 1990. The most victories in a season
for the program is 30 in 1986. |

In the opening game of the conference doubleheader, the Poet offense
only provided four hits. Beth Walczak '10 provided two
hits, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Charis Gaston
'09 and Brown each were credited with RBI. Deena Arenas '08
(9-10) pitched four and one-third innings, giving up eight runs on
seven hits and five walks in the loss.
Cal Lutheran scored one in the top of the second inning to take the
early lead. The Poets tied the score in the bottom half of the
inning when Brown drew a bases loaded walk to bring home a run.
The Regals found their stride offensively in the fourth and fifth
innings, as they scored four and seven runs, respectively, to go up
12-1. The Poets scored just one in the bottom of the fifth, ending
the game 12-2 after the eight-run mercy rule.
Game two was a different story for the Poets. Brown went 3-for-4
with a pair of RBI. Gaston and Sheryl Fukuda '08 each went
2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Fukuda also doubled.
Mary Pacheco '10 hit a two-run double and Vicky Ovieda '09
went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. She also earned her 14th win of
the season, pitching all seven innings and giving up just one earned run
on three hits and five walks. The Poets committed five errors
resulting in five unearned runs.
The Regals began the game with one run in the opening stanza. The
Poets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, scoring three
runs on an RBI single from Gaston and a two-run double from Pacheco.
Cal Lutheran made the score 3-2 with another run in the top of the third
and then took over the lead with three runs in the fifth inning.
The Poets came back with a big fifth inning of their own, using five
hits and a walk to score five runs and take an 8-5 lead. The
Regals scored one in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-6. |
