Athletics Department News

The Whittier College Athletics Department is pleased to announce the addition of three head coaches.  The recent hires will fill coaching vacancies in the track and field programs and golf program this spring and the women's soccer program next fall.

Dave Hogan
has been named head coach of the track and field teams.  He brings 29 years of coaching experience with 23 years in track and 10 years in football. His last 12 years have been in track at Valley Christian in Cerritos and he has been the head coach since 2000. He built that program from 57 athletes to 108 and has finished in the top ten for both boys and girls the last two years. Hogan specializes in the throws and sprints and has coached 13 CIF champions during that time. The program has sent 16 athletes to compete in college in the last 6 years.

Mike Miller has taken over as the head coach of the golf program.  He has been a golf instructor since 1997, when he hosted the first Nike Junior Golf School in Orange County.  He has since been an assistant coach at his alma mater, Santa Ana College and most recently served as the assistant golf professional at La Costa resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.  He is still a Junior Golf Instructor and Mission Viejo Country Club and is a referee for high school basketball.

The women’s soccer team will also see a change on the sidelines next fall.  Nicole Gervais takes over as head coach after spending the past five seasons as an assistant at her alma mater, Principia College.
Gervais is the all-time leading scorer in Principia history netting 84 goals with 54 assists for 222 total points during her career. She was a 3-time SLIAC Player of the Year and 2-time NSCAA regional team selection at Principia.  Prior to her time there, she coached and assisted in a high school girls' program at Bishop Montgomery in California, served as a trainer for the U-19 Palos Verdes Breakers and head coach of the girl’s junior high school team in the Palos Verdes School District. Gervais has earned a Master’s degree from the United States Sports Academy and holds the NSCAA National Diploma.
