Leader: Luis Moreno, CSU-Northridge
Participants: Luis Moreno, José Moreno, Francisco Romero, CSU-Northridge

On September 14, 2002, a tremendously important gathering, the “Conference On Raza Press, Media, And Popular Expression: Its History And Its Use As A Tool For Liberation,” took place in Oxnard, California. Organized by the Raza Press Association, dozens of journalist, writers, and activist gathered to discuss how Raza can must use the media to raise the social consciousness of our people as a means of contributing to the movement to end the oppression of, not only Chicano Mexicanos, but all people, no matter what their race, sex, or class. Participants included distinguish scholars and activists such as Rudy Acuna, Antonia Darder, Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, Jose Montoya, Juan Gomez Quinonez, and many more. The purpose of the conference was to: 1) To Establish and Promote and Accountable and Collective Raza Alternative Media Network; (2) To Promote and Expand the Raza Media News Wire Service; and (3) To Establish and Archive/ Collection of Raza Alternative Media.

The panel on “The Raza Press, Media, And Popular Expression: Its History And Its Use As A Tool For Liberation,”will continue the dialogue and effort to concretely build a Raza press/media that struggle for and defend the interests of the Mexicano-Raza-Latino masses, as set in motion by the September 14th Conference. The panel will address the question of women, barrio youth, academics, and organizations, from the perspective of media expression (murals, newspapers, internet, poetry, art, theater, and etc.). Those attendances will leave the workshop with knowledge of what can be done to liberate La Raza through various means of media expression.
