Panel 3: Advances in Maya Cave Archeology

Recent archaeological investigation has uncovered increasingly varied functions for caves as important landmarks in the sacred landscapes. Here we present high level politico-religious functions as focuses of group identity, loci of political legitimacy and centers of pilgrimage on a regional scale. As such caves were stages for celebration of victory in battle and of termination in defeat.
