“Porfirio Díaz vs. The United States”
Traditionally Porfirio Diaz has been portrayed as a faithfully
follower of Washington’s dictates. However, Porfirio Diaz’
diplomatic stance towards the United States evidentiates that
Diaz questioned United States’ juridical system highlighting the
injustices committed against Mexicans living in the Southwest.
At the same time the Department of State initiated a campaign to
oversee Mexican administration of Justice towards Americans
living in Mexico. This dynamic provoked a diplomatic
confrontation in which the Diaz’ regime uphold its laws forcing
the United States’ government and its citizens to abide by the
Mexican regulations.
Diaz’ diplomacy towards the United States indicate that he might
not have been as servile to Washington’s wishes as traditional
historians have asserted and this paper will try to offer a new
interpretation of the Diaz and his interactions with the
Department of the State.
