“The Recent Impact of Transnational Indigenous
Organizations in Mexico and the US”
My paper looks at patterns of transnational indigenous
organizing in Mexico and the United States. It covers the
period from 1992, when a hemispheric movement of
indigenous runners (Peace and Dignity) gathered at the
pyramids outside of Mexico City until the recent
abrogation of the Instituto Indigneista Nacional in Mexico
City. The abrogation of this institute followed a decade
of intense Indian activism in Mexico and from transplanted
organizations in the United States. This activism
culminated with the signing of the Treaty of San Andres,
which had it been honored, gave indigenous communities
partial autonomy. |
