GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN EDUCATION


Thank you for your interest the Whittier College Teacher Credential Program.  Once you have met with the Graduate Admission Counselor she will then set up an appointment for you with the Credential Analyst in the Department of Education & Child Development.

How the Credential Analyst can assist you:

·   Explain the process of getting a California teaching credential

·   Explain the programs Whittier College offers

·   Provide information on required tests

·   Help you with the application process

·   Evaluate your transcripts for specific requirements

·   Map out a plan for program completion

·   Answer technical questions about necessary testing requirements and other issues pertaining to credentialing

·   Upon successful completion of the credential program, recommend you for a credential



To be considered for admission, applicants need to meet the following minimum standards:

·   B.A. or B.S. from an accredited institution

·   Transcripts of all college work

·   Minimum of 2.8 GPA in the last 60 graded units

·   A personal statement of purpose

·   2-4 Letters of Recommendation

·   Passage of CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test)

·   Meeting of standards described in the department document, Standards For Admission To, Advancement In, And Completion Of Teaching Programs

·   Interview with program faculty before admission

In addition, applicants for internships must show proof at admission that required subject matter preparation has been completed.

Continuation and Advancement in Teacher Education Programs

The faculty of the Department of Education and Child Development is committed to the helping students attain the highest academic and professional standards. Thus, the department has established the following criteria for continuation and advancement in teacher education programs:

Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in professional preparation courses with no grade lower than a B-. Students must petition the Department of Education and Child Development to repeat a credential requirement in which a grade below B- is earned.

Students must demonstrate consistent, continuous progress toward mastering the Teaching Performance Competencies defined by the State of California under Senate Bill 2042. Students demonstrate such progress by (1) maintaining a complete and thoughtful electronic portfolio that meets department specifications and (2) taking and passing California Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA) in a timely fashion, as required by the department.

Students must consistently meet all of the standards described in the Department of Education and Child Development's document, Standards for Admission to, Advancement in, and Completion of Teaching Programs. Criteria and procedures related to implementation of these standards are defined in the document. All students interested in Whittier College's education programs should obtain and study the document.
