Continuation and Advancement in Teacher Education Programs
The faculty of the Department of Education and
Child Development is committed to the helping students attain the
highest academic and professional standards. Thus, the department
has established the following criteria for continuation and
advancement in teacher education programs:
Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in professional
preparation courses with no grade lower than a B-. Students must
petition the Department of Education and Child Development to repeat
a credential requirement in which a grade below B- is earned.
Students must demonstrate consistent, continuous progress toward
mastering the Teaching Performance Competencies defined by the State
of California under Senate Bill 2042. Students demonstrate such
progress by (1) maintaining a complete and thoughtful electronic
portfolio that meets department specifications and (2) taking and
passing California Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA) in a
timely fashion, as required by the department.
Students must consistently meet all of the standards described in
the Department of Education and Child Development's document,
Standards for
Admission to, Advancement in, and Completion of Teaching Programs. Criteria
and procedures related to implementation of these standards are defined in
the document. All students interested in Whittier College's education
programs should obtain and study the document.
