ABOUT ECONOMICS CLUB AT
WHITTIER COLLEGEThe Whittier
College Economics Club consists of Economics majors and minors,
however other students who are genuinely interested in the
science of Economics participate as well. Founded in 1998, the
club creates a social and academic atmosphere where students
interested in economics get together. Since then, the Econ Club
has expanded in both membership and activities. Throughout the
year, the Econ Club hosts a variety of activities on and
off-campus. The most popular activities include (but are not
limited to) inviting economists to lead discussions at Whittier
College, showing movies with economic content, taking trips to
local economic institutions, and discuss current economic
issues.
ECONOMICS CLUB ACTIVITIES
The Economics Club at Whittier College
has recently been restructured to include new members and new
programs. Energized students willing to get involved in
different projects are not rare in the Econ Club. Below are only
some of the activities that the Econ Club has put forth this
last year.
In fall 2004, with funds raised earlier,
the Econ Club purchased some tables and chairs for the patio in
front of the Economics Department. The convenient and scenic
location of the patio has made it one of the most popular spots
on campus. Most students use these facilities to study, read or
just hang out.
On November 26, 2004 Whittier College
hosted the Southern California Conference on Undergraduate
Research (SCURR). Economics Club members got very involved in
different aspects of this event by assisting conference
organizers.
In addition, last fall the Economics
Club, sponsored by the Economics Department, organized an
off-campus lunch with faculty members and Economics majors and
minors. Participants loved the experience, but not only for the
food. The event provided a great opportunity for students to get
know professors in the department and vice versa.
Recently, supported by the Economics
faculty, the Econ Club has begun to organize a weekly luncheon
with students and professors. During this luncheon students
discuss a variety of issues with professors. This event takes
place every Thursday; just a couple of days after students
receive The Economist magazine, which is the center of
economic discussion on Thursdays.
The Economic Movie Series is one of the
most recent projects initiated by the Economics Club. This is a
2-3 hour biweekly event, during which students are invited to
watch a movie that has economic content. A short lecture by a
professor about an economic concept that is referred to always
precedes the movie. The first movie that the Econ Club presented
was "A Beautiful Mind", whereby Professor Campbell addressed the
Nash equilibrium and game theory. Snacks and refreshments are
always served at these events.
There are many more projects that the
Economics Club is working on this semester. We will keep you
updated.
