Analytical Chemist
The Whittier College
Chemistry Department is searching to fill a full-time, tenure-track
position in analytical chemistry with a starting date of September, 2007
(pending approval). A PhD. in analytical chemistry is required and a
focus on environmental chemistry is preferred.
Whittier College is a liberal arts college
with a Quaker heritage located in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Whittier College is a nationally recognized
school that is classified as a Baccalaureate I (Liberal Arts) institution
and is a member of an exclusive group of about one hundred liberal arts
colleges known as the Annapolis Group. The approximately 100 faculty
are excellent teachers in the classroom and scholars outside the
classroom. The 1350 students are excellent and their ethnic, racial,
cultural and political diversity makes Whittier College
the 2nd most diverse liberal arts college in the nation. 42% of our
student body comes from under-represented minorities, 28 % are Hispanic,
making Whittier
College a Hispanic serving
institution (HSI).
The Whittier Chemistry department is a five-member department that is
ACS-approved. The faculty have successfully received several grants
in the last few years: two Department of Defense Grants resulted in
acquiring a 300 MHz NMR, a GC-mass spectrometer, and two GCs, and a NSF
grant resulted in the acquisition of a new
HPLC and a Capillary Electrophoresis instrument. In addition, three
faculty members participate in undergraduate research and have taken
students to present their work at ACS national, regional, and local
meetings as well as the Southern California Conference on Undergraduate
Research (SCCUR). Whittier
had the honor of hosting SCCUR on November 20, 2004, and members of the
chemistry department were actively involved in organizing the conference.
The chemistry department typically graduates 6-10 students per year with
one of three majors: chemistry, chemistry with ACS certification, and
biochemistry. Whittier’s
chemistry graduates typically enter medical school, graduate school in
chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, other health science schools such as
pharmacy, dentistry, or optometry, work in industry, or teach chemistry in
high school. In recent years, students have earned Ph.D., M.D., Pharm. D., and O.D. degrees from highly respected
institutions. We’ve also had one student who is a Rhodes
Scholar.
A typical teaching load is two lecture courses and
two laboratory sections each semester as well as contribution to lab
courses in January.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY - WHITTIER COLLEGE
Tenure-track position as Assistant Professor starting 9/07 in a
5-person, ACS-approved department. Ph.D. in analytical chemistry is
required with an environmental focus preferred. Potential as effective
teacher, desire to direct undergraduate research, and commitment to the
liberal arts are essential qualifications. Teaching responsibilities
include analytical/instrumental analysis, lower division courses and
