Introduction:

As part of the Liberal Education Curriculum at Whittier College, the Science and Math in Context courses encourage students to explore the role of science and math in every aspect of life. Through these courses, we have several goals for our students:

Students should learn about science and math within the context of the course.

Students should learn to evaluate science critically.

Students should learn how scientific theories are created and should be able to determine whether they are sound theories.

Students should understand the power and limitations of science.

Students should investigate the real world implications and scope of science and math.

This course, "I Want a New Drug", focuses on the major roles that Pharmaceutical drugs play in our history, bodies, lives and society. We depend on them for our health. We use (or misuse) them to affect our lifestyles. Sometimes, however, we live without having a sufficient knowledge of the impact they have. We will be investigating several important facets of the Science and Context of Drugs:

	The Science of Health and Illness
	The Science and Efficacy of Drugs
	The Development of New Pharmaceutical Medicines
	The Implications of Drug Testing and Federal Approval
	The Economics of Medicines and Pharmaceutical Industries
	The Future of Health, Illness and Medicine
