Biochem II
Exploring the Structure and Function Relationship of Biological Molecules

CHEM 471B
Whittier College
Spring 2004

A complex biological structure: a ribosome

Introduction:

Biochemistry is the science that investigates the characteristics, structure and reactivity of molecules that function in living systems.  The fundamental concepts covered in this class will enable you to understand the chemistry that occurs in  large biological molecules like proteins and nucleic acids.

Goals for the Course:
bulletDevelop logical problem solving skills
bulletUnderstand the fundamental relationship between structure and reactivity within biological molecules
bulletUnderstand and use the scientific method
bulletLearn about the fundamental reactions of biochemistry
bulletBecome familiar with the laboratory skills and techniques used in the field.
bulletBecome familiar with the chemical literature
bulletLearn how to write about and present articles in biochemistry
bulletDevelop the skills to describe chemistry to non-scientists
