Scholarships

We understand
that many college students worry about how they will pay for
their education, which is why CAS has created a free database
that lists over 100 scholarships. The database is updated on a
regular basis and new scholarships are added each week.
Students searching for the perfect scholarship should check back
periodically to review the latest additions. |

Applicants must be 25 years old or younger as of the contest
deadline: March 30, 2008, reside in Arab League member states,
Iran, Afghanistan, or the United States. Prizes are awarded as
cash, not scholarships. |
|
Description |
An online application is now available. In addition to the
application, a 600-1500 word essay is required. Applicants need
to answer one of the following questions:
1. Why should Americans - like you - help civil rights reformers
in the Middle East? Consider the new
civil rights movement rising today in the Mideast, and make the
case for why Americans should help reformers on the frontlines.
Address the doubts and apathy some people feel towards the
region, and explain why protecting individual rights is so
important.
2. How can you as an individual support the struggle for civil
rights in the Middle East?
Describe the tools at your disposal to help civil rights
reformers and propose a campaign with specific actions that you
can initiate in your community. Rather than wait for the
government to act, outline a gameplan for your campaign.
3. What can the future look like if
Americans - like you - partner with Middle Eastern reformers?
Share your vision of a successful collaboration between Mideast
and American activists. Describe how an effective joint campaign
overcomes key obstacles. If you like, answer the question by
writing a mock newspaper article from the year 2012 reporting on
this new alliance.
Footnotes,
citations, and essay title do not count towards the word limit.
Winners will be notified (and announced on our web site) by July
2008. Judges evaluate each essay for clarity, creativity, and
persuasiveness to determine prize winners. Do
not
focus on US government policy and regional
geo-politics (the Iraq War debate, the Arab-Israeli-Iranian
conflict, Iran's nuclear program, etc.). Essays based on these
topics are disqualified. Judges are looking for essays that
explore what ordinary citizens can do on the grassroots level to
strengthen individual rights
within Middle Eastern societies. These civil rights
include, but are not limited to, free expression, women's
equality, minority rights, religious freedom, economic liberty,
and artistic freedom. |

The "LIFE
Lessons" Essay Contest is open only to legal residents of the fifty
(50) United States and the District of Columbia, who are between 17
and 24 years of age, have experienced the death of a parent or legal
guardian, and are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a
college, university or trade school within the fifty (50) United
States or District of Columbia. |
|
Description |
|
The loss of a
parent or guardian is one of life's most difficult ordeals. The
emotional strain can be devastating to children and young adults.
And for too many families, an untimely death brings financial stress
too, making recovery all the more difficult. Recognizing the
character and perseverance many young people show in the face of
such adversity, the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for
Education is sponsoring the LIFE Lessons Essay Contest for college
students and college-bound high school seniors. Qualified entrants
who submit essays about how the death of a parent or guardian
impacted their lives will be eligible for $15,000 in scholarship
money. In addition to some basic information, you'll need to submit
a brief essay (500 words max) about your experience, and how having,
or not having life, health or other kinds of insurance made a
difference in getting your family back on track. |

The Surety
Industry Scholarship for Minority Students is available only to
full-time undergraduate students at accredited four-year
educational institutions. Awards are granted primarily based on
merit (academic and personal achievement); financial need is
evaluated as a secondary criteria. For purposes of this
program, The Surety Foundation defines minorities as those of
Black, Native American/Alaskan Native, Asian/Pacific Islander,
or of Hispanic ethnic origin. All applicants must be U.S.
citizens, have a declared major in the following areas:
accounting, business/finance or insurance/risk management with
an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0
scale, and has satisfactorily completed at least 30 semester
hours, or equivalent college work, including at least six
semester hours (or equivalent) in your major field. |
|
Description |
|
The objective of
the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to minority
students who show significant potential to become surety
professionals. In awarding scholarships, the Committee looks at
each application and supporting documentation to identify those
students who demonstrate they are taking the necessary step
towards this goal. In addition to the online application,
applicants need to submit a copy of their official transcripts,
and a completed Financial Aid Worksheet, one letter of
recommendation from a faculty member, one letter of
recommendation from someone outside of the educational
institution who knows you well in a personal and/or professional
capacity. Scholarships are competitive on a year to year basis;
you must re-apply each year for a scholarship renewal, they are
not automatic or guaranteed. Additionally, the award amount may
be different. However, strong consideration is given to those
students who have been previously awarded Surety Industry
Scholarships and who have maintained a high standard of academic
and personal achievement. All materials should be sent to:
