Take-home Exercise 3, Due: 10/7/03

Team Number _______

Names ________________ ________________ ________________

In this exercise, you will first access the Census Bureau’s "IDB Data Access - Spreadsheets" Web page in order to retrieve the Crude Death Rates of your two countries for all the years between 1950 and 2020. Note that for many countries, this data is available only for some years prior to 1996. Try to find ALL the available data for both of your countries. Then import this data to Excel and create an Excel worksheet similar to the following table:

Year

[Country 1]

[Country 2]

1950

1951

1952

.

.

.

2018

2019

2020

Now have Excel draw the line charts for the Crude Death Rates of both countries on the same set of axes (the horizontal axis being the years 19?? — 2020).

Next, return to the Census Bureau’s "IDB Data Access - Spreadsheets" Web page in order to retrieve the Infant Mortality rates (both sexes), and Life Expectancy at Birth (both sexes) of both countries for all the years in the range 1950 - 2020 that you could find. Have Excel draw bar charts for the IMR of both countries on the same set of axes. Repeat the same for the Life Expectancy data. Using the data, the charts, and any additional information you may have, discuss the mortality patterns in your two countries. Leading causes of death for each of your countries, and the relationship of the data patterns to the demographic transition should also be discussed.
